Original Thought and Idea Formulation

Throughout history, all “ideas” was first “formulated” from thoughts”.

> Socrates – Observed/Identified “Formulated idea”

> Newton – Movement of celestial bodies “Universal Law of Gravitation”

> Einstein – Inconsistencies in Light/Time “General Relativity (E = mc2)”

> Charles Darwin -Natural Selection

> Nikola Tesla – Observe, Identify, Formulate “A symphony of Energy, Frequency and Vibration

This means Thinking First, Principles Second then Design Afterwards.
The manifestation of idea’s or new ideas in Surveying community requires First Principle Thinking, Layer Stacking and development of each idea to form a concept.

The Popular Surveying Principle and The Foundation of Professional Land Surveying; “WHOLE to PART” is an original idea that as resulted into different Concept and Systems.

In reality, this idea sounds basic, but still remains the backbone of Positional Accuracy, Boundary Intergrity and Cadastral Reliability.

In professional Surveying practise, this Principle means establishing a primary control network before anyform of measurement on the earth surface.

“WHOLE to PART” framework begins with a known reference, a geodetic control point, benchmark, CORS or established coordinate System.

This whole concept is the science of determining precise position on earth surface.

From this Original Thought
👉🏾 First “Thinking”; WHOLE to PART
👉🏾 Second “Principles”;
Establishing a Primary Control Network
👉🏾 Afterwards “Design”; Geodetic Control, Benchmark, CORS or Established coordinate System.

1) OBSERVE & IDENTIFY
“Observation” is more than just seeing; it is a deliberate act of noticing patterns (patterns recognition), inefficiencies or gap in a specific environment (The physical Environment, The Human Factor, The Data Landscape).
As a young Surveyor that want to solve a problem or formulate an idea using a system approach, requires having a beginner’s mind
This requires dropping your expertise for a moment (unlearning what you already know) and seeing the friction points that other omit or have become accustomed to and no longer notice.

Moving from “Noticing” (Observation) to “Identifying” the core problem requires narrowing your focus to define exactly what is happening.
▶️ Identify the Constraint
▶️ Identify the Stakeholders
▶️ Identify the Impact

2) BRAINSTORMING & EXPLORE
Brainstorming requires exploration, which means exploring the Identified problem and having the right technical hands, in some case forming a team of knowledgeable people with the required skills etc

3) CONNECT & SYNTHESIZE
Connecting and Synthesis is where your Observation and identified problems merge into a viable concept that follows a logical progression.
✅ What if Phase; begin asking divergent questions (thinking in different pathways base on the original thought)
✅ Technical Grounding; the idea is now feasible, then formulation and having access to the required tools, resources and frameworks.
✅ Value Proposition; For example “Using [Method/Technology] to address [Identified Problem], we can achieve [Specific Results]

4) REFINE & PROTOTYPE
Refine & Prototype is different, this is base on Solutions,Theories, Concepts or Products from the original thought. It is the end result or the physical product, does it require manufacturing in series or replicating the original product or incorporating other systems.

5) VALIDATE & IMPLEMENT
Validating the Formulated idea, means the idea is ready for implementation and should be tested against the original Observation.
👉🏾 Direct Observation; does the idea solve the specific friction noticed.
👉🏾 Scalability; Does it work for a local Government unit as well as regional or world based.
👉🏾 Sustainability; will the idea hold up against environmental or economic changes over time.
