Field Work is an interesting aspect of surveying. Field work in Surveying involves directly observing, measuring, and recording physical features of the Earth’s surface to create accurate maps, plans to establish property boundaries, special features depending on the nature of Surveying.
Field work represents the pratical, on-site phase of a project where data is collected and verified in real-world environment.
Component of Field Work
1) Observation and Data Capture: Making use of high-precision instruments like Total Stations, GNSS recievers, and UAVs to measure angles, distances and coordinates.
2) Site Identification: Identifying and marking physical boundaries, cadastral layers, or infrastructure points such as pipeline network and road cross-sections.
3) Recording: Maintaining a rigorous record in a field book or digital controller to ensure every measurement is documented for future processing.
4) Safety & Execution: Operating within strict safely protocols, which include wearing proper PPE like high-visibility vests, hard hats, and safely boots to mitigate site hazards, improving general safety.
Why Field Work is Essential
> Field work serves as the bridge between theoretical design and physical reality:
👉🏾 Precision: It provides the raw, high fidelity data needed for GIS integration and CAD/BIM delivery.
👉🏾 Validation: It allows professionals to verify “observe and identify” frameworks against the actual conditions of the land.
👉🏾 Standardization: Proper field work relies on the use of Standardised equipment and “complete Surveying gear” to ensure results institutional technical standards.
Essential Field Gear for site Work:
A) High Visibility Vest – Fluorescent Orange/Yellow for safety and Visibility on site.
B) Hard Hat – To Protect head from falling objects.
C) Safety Boots – Sturdy for grip, Slip-resistant footwear for rugged terrain.
D) Safety Glasses – protection against dust, wind and debris.
E) Work/Hand Gloves – For hand protection on site.
F) Sunscreen & Hat – For outdoor protection.
G) First Aid Kit – For minor injuries on site.
