In 1833, Lincoln obtained a surveyor’s license in Illinois and worked as a surveyor for several years, helping to map out the terrain and boundaries of properties in the region. His time as a surveyor gave him a deeper understanding of the importance of infrastructure development, such as roads and canals, which would later inform his policies as president.
